Pavenham Women's Institute

Pavenham WI was one of the first to be started in Bedfordshire. It was inaugurated in 1910 and has been a thriving Pavenham society since that time. It provides ladies of our village with an interesting monthly meeting with good speakers and companionship. In fact for newcomers to the village it is a wonderful way to make friends whilst those who are long standing villagers are able to keep in touch on a regular basis.

The old minutes of the WI tell of the work done by the committees throughout the years to entertain the members in many ways by using their skills of baking, acting, sewing, keep fit, craft and knitting as well as a lot of walking. They have always been very active and a driving force in the village.

At present we have fifty one members and as well as our monthly meetings have a monthly Luncheon Club at a local pub-very popular. We also run a Book Group. The members meet monthly at each others houses to discuss the book they have read that month. We actively support the annual Flower and Plant Show and an annual charity lunch.

Any new residents to the village are most welcome . Please contact President Ann Clark who will be delighted to take you along to a meeting.

Monthly meetings held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Village Hall.
See the Village Diary page for the full calendar of events.

The Pavenham W I recently celebrated its 90th birthday, and the following is a report of that event:

The W.I. enjoyed a wonderful lunch to celebrate their 90th birthday. Members and past members, some of whom had travelled some distance to attend were welcomed with a champagne reception and the opportunity to meet and chat with friends.

Pavenham Village Hall looked most inviting with large pedestal flower arrangements in autumn colours to compliment the hall decor. The round tables set for eight each had a most original central table decoration of golden yellow and apricot roses with lime green foliage arranged in a terracotta pot, which with yellow napkins made a very festive scene.

The proceedings opened with a welcome from our President Mrs Ann Clark and we all stood to sing Jerusalem.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of salmon pate, Boeuf Bourgignon and trifle or chocolate roulade with red or white wine or elderflower presse. This was followed by tea or coffee with delicious florentines and a piece of the excellent birthday cake which was prettily decorated with apricot roses. The President asked Mrs Ivy Game who celebrates a special birthday in October to cut the cake and presented her with a plant before presenting the usual birthday posies.

After lunch we drank a toast to Pavenham W.I. and got on with some serious chatting and catching up with old friends who had come especially for the celebration.

With all our guests and members suitably replete and relaxed it seemed an appropriate moment for a short trip down memory lane. A pageant was presented chronicling Paavenham W.I.s progress through the 20th century from our minute books, concentrating on the 20s, 40s and 60s with the readers trying hard to give the impression they too had walked out of those minute books, with costumes to match. This provided great amusement as we listened and remembered and as always happens found our actions and memories very amusing with hindsight.

During our lunch we had some gentle background music provided by Bill Johns and his Avon Disco and a DVD made from photos in our scrapbooks. Bill also provided very effective musical accompaniment and sound effects to the pageant.

Votes of thanks were prosposed on behalf of the guests to the Institute and to the President for her inspiration and organisation in bringing about this outstanding and enjoyable event.
